| Abstract | This panel explores how the borders of strife, authority, law, and subsistence were negotiated, crossed, and challenged, in the Low Countries of the 12th to 15th centuries. Adopting a wide range of historiographical approaches, from legal and social history to economic, administrative, military, and ecclesiastical history, the sessions aims to offer new understandings of how episcopal, urban, and seigneurial authorities functioned in times of peace and times of war. Paper-A analyses the boundaries of episcopal military power and the authorial challenges to narrative representations of warrior-bishops in Liège. Paper-B explores crime and punishment in Leiden by comparing cases in periods of both economic prosperity and decline. |
