Abstract | The papers in this session consider three specific case studies of the operation of frontiers and the challenges these brought to regnal and sub-regnal power and elite networks. Marco Panato frames his discussion of the role of the delta and the lagoon with reference to local communities on the ground. He highlights that contacts outside these frontier zones served to define borderlands, hinterlands, and community cohesion. Secondly, Andrea Mariani analyses the contexts over the longue durée of the comitatus Leuci who controlled one crucial area adjacent to the Lago di Como and the river Adda. Finally, Edoardo Manarini analyses the fluvial and hydrographic management of frontier zones by the influential Abbots of Nonantola. |
