Abstract | Early narratives and a study of land values and rental yields increase our knowledge of the origin and rural land use of Fountains Abbey, while archaeological and historical investigations of the French Cistercian foundation of de Bello Becco (near the medieval walled town and port of Drogheda within the medieval Liberty of Meath, Ireland) - as well as the role of monastic estates of the Welsh religious houses of Llanthony Prima and Furness abbey in securing a border around this De Lacy stronghold - exhibit the expansion of the Cistercian Order and the intricacies of rural politics. |
