| Abstract | Metternich's famous maxim that Italy was merely a 'geographical expression' was never more true than in the Middle Ages. The political geography of medieval Italy was a kaleidoscope of territories and states; the peninsula was linguistically diverse; it had a number of differing legal and numismatic systems and faith communities; there was a very strong demarcation between urban and rural life. Yet, many of these apparent boundaries were in reality highly fluid and permeable, susceptible to political change, migration, and acculturation. This round table discussion provides an opportunity for further discussion of some of the themes addressed in the sessions presented in the strand 'Borders as Markers of Space, Culture, and Identity in Medieval Italy' as well as other questions relevant to 'Borders' in general. Participants include Frances Andrews (University of St Andrews), Ross Balzaretti (University of Nottingham), and Robert Houghton (University of Winchester). |
