Abstract

We will discuss the ways the biographical and personal impacts the textual products surrounding medieval mystics and visionaries - both hagiographical and self-authored works. How does approaching these texts from a lived-experience perspective enable us to look beyond the overarching master tropes that are generally used to interpret such works? How is the biographical woven into these master narratives of what are generally very genre-determined texts, creating individual versions that are shaped by their local context and personal memories?

Participants include John Arblaster (Universiteit Antwerpen), Hannah Victoria Johnson (Sorbonne Université, Paris), and Amanda J. Langley (Queen Mary, University of London).
