| Abstract | In 2008, during an inventory of medieval manuscripts in Leipzig University Library, some passages from the Second Book of The Herald of God's Loving-Kindness by St Gertrude of Helfta, were discovered in Ms 827. Paleographic studies date the codex to the beginning of the 14th century, making it the oldest-known manuscript of The Herald, copied shortly after Gertrude died. Leipzig Ms 827 has relevant implications for the understanding of The Herald, since it contains some portions of text until now unknown, while some parts present in the known version are missing in the newly discovered codex. In 2018, the International Committee for Nomination of Saint Gertrude as Doctor of the Church committed itself to publishing the Leipzig Manuscript and to translating it into several modern languages. The task was entrusted to an international team, some of whose members make up this session. Today the critical bilingual edition of Leipzig Ms 827 in Latin-French, is about to be released. This session aims to introduce the main features of the forthcoming edition, the critical issues raised by the text, and some possible hermeneutic ways to solve them, with the larger goal of spreading and fostering the progress of studies relating to the codex. |
