Abstract | The idea of networks is not an invention of modern times. They can already be found in the past, while their nature has remained mostly unchanged across history: They are often defined as permanent, mostly informal relationship structures between individuals and groups. Their analysis refers to different social dimensions such as personal contacts, socially normalised practices, and transnational exchange. In this session we propose to look at intellectual networks in the early and high Middle Ages and explore them from different angles. The study of intellectual networks in the early and high Middle Ages can broaden our understanding of cross-border knowledge exchange and cultural connection and influences. |
