Abstract | The medieval world was characterised by a great variety of borders which, overlapping and intertwining with each other, marked both the physical and the intangible world. Studying the movements of objects, people, and ideas across geographical and immaterial frontiers is fundamental for understanding the border itself. From the diplomatic practices performed at the border of the Carolingian Empire, to the exchange of material and immaterial gifts among Buda, Moscow, and Milan, to the interpenetration of popular and ecclesiastical music in the late medieval courts, the aim of this session is to investigate cultural and material encounters through the lens of the borders. |
