| Abstract | Life for women and men in double monasteries needed to be regulated, clear borders were required: borders to the outside world, of power and obedience, of education, in architecture, regarding the knowledge of God, and of piety. But borders also bore the potential to build bridges across divides. The prevailing narrative that double monasteries, only a few decades after their heyday during the 11th- to 12th-century reform movement and with the foundation of the Premonstratensian Order, became irreligiosus et indecens, needs to be revised. In this panel we will explore double monasteries as places of inclusive and exclusive borders discussing mixed-sex structures and collaborations, while questioning the master narrative of their alleged decline. |
