Abstract | The first panel explores representations of mothers in medieval vernacular literature. Kaitlin Sager investigates instances of hybrid mothers and children in Arthurian literature and medical accounts to explore attitudes surrounding the maternal body. Kirsty Bolton examines how Arthur's lineage, and the homosocial bonds between Arthur and Lancelot, prevent Guinevere from being a mother. Lauren Sisson considers themes of consumption and incorporation in Middle English literary portrayals of mother-son relationships, and how such portrayals construct certain identities. |
