Abstract | The 12th century has been called the 'age of love', but 'age of loves' might be more accurate. Love in the 12th century encompassed a varied range of vocabulary and social significations. The papers in this session consider what love means within theology, ritual, and law, showing the different ways love functioned while also highlighting areas of overlap. The first paper will consider how 12th-century theologians oriented devotion around the nature of love. The final paper will analyze how the language of love and friendship characterized legal agreements within 12th-century English law. |
