| Abstract | Double monasteries were and still are polarising. The master narrative about the maintenance of double monasteries, which were both praised (e.g. Herman of Tournai) and condemned (e.g. Bernard of Clairvaux) in the Middle Ages, is that they recessed over the centuries. However, double monasteries continued to exist until the late Middle Ages and with the Birgittine Order we even see new houses being established at a time of strict observance. Other double monasteries like Engelberg or Adelberg survived into the late Middle Ages and longer. This interdisciplinary panel will deal with aspects of communal life such as liturgy and power dynamics in double monasteries of the late Middle Ages. |
