Abstract	These papers explore issues of political authority and office-holding in the first half of the 14th century. Matthew Hefferan uses the career of Ralph Stafford as a case study to consider the impact of a 'new man' entering the ranks of the elite during a period of political uncertainty. Andrew Spencer then examines Edward III's recovery of royal power in the 1340s before Samuel Lane explores the king's patronage to his bishops and what this demonstrates in relation to discussion of royal patronage in the later Middle Ages more broadly.
