Abstract | This session will focus on frontier warfare, a persistent reality in late medieval Iberia. From the continuous struggle against Islam to the various conflicts between different Christian kingdoms, border military activity shaped much of Iberian medieval warfare. The first paper will explore the formation and development of the fortifications meant to defend the Valencian frontier from their origin until their definitive configuration after the 'War of the Two Pedros (1356-66)'. The second paper will analyse the particularities of the military organization and operational apparatus of the Portuguese Alentejo region, a very active area during the never-ending wars against Castile. The final paper will discuss frontier warfare tactics employed by Castile in their conflicts against Granada during the 15th-century, focusing on the ambushes, chevauchées, and night escalades. |
