Abstract

This interdisciplinary research network examines the pas d'armes (passage of arms), a highly elaborate form of late medieval tournament that was practised all over Europe. These costly and elite stagings involving a knight who challenged all comers of noble birth to fight him using lances, swords or axes was not just a sporting event but also a political, social, cultural, and artistic performance and a multi-media spectacle witnessed by both courtly and urban audiences. This panel will outline the problems involved in defining a pas d'armes corpus, present the network's methods for making sources on these events accessible to both academic and non-academic audiences, and engage an interdisciplinary dialogue between scholars and museum professionals on how best to showcase artefacts relating to pas d'armes in both real and virtual environments.

Participants include Catherine Blunk (Drury University, Missouri), Mario Damen (Universiteit van Amsterdam), Jacob H. Deacon (University of Leeds), Ralph Moffat (Glasgow Museums), Klaus P. Oschema (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), and Karen Watts (University of Leeds).
