Session 408: Anarchising the Middle Ages: Anarchist Approaches to the Middle Ages (AAMA) General Assembly - A Round Table Discussion

| Abstract | As with our general meetings at previous IMCs, we begin with five-minute presentations reflecting on contributors' current application of anarchist methodology to thinking, learning, teaching, and writing about the past. Matt Raven introduces us to Greg Anderson's The Realness of Things Past (2018), which challenges us to write in a way that does not impose modern, Eurocentric concepts and metaphysical assumptions on non-modern and non-western societies. Gustav Zamore applies David Graeber's book Bullshit Jobs (2018) to our own discipline and suggests how to resist its devaluing and commodification. Monika Eisenhaur challenges us to confront the impact of the elite marginalisation of apocalyptic Christology on understanding the later Middle Ages. It is hoped that these brief interventions will provide a starting point for wider discussion on anarchising the Middle Ages.
