Abstract

This panel takes a multi-perspective view of the papacy, focusing on different perceptions of the institution, medieval and later. Paper 1 looks at Innocent III's relations with Portugal. Paper 2 continues analysing papal-Portuguese relations in the mid-13th century. Finally, Paper 3 takes a historiographical approach, looking at how the papacy was studied at Imperial Russian universities.
