Abstract

This session aims at discussing the living conditions of Jews in medieval Europe's border regions and the challenges they faced as both individuals and communities. While Jewish businessmen and -women as well as scholars moved between territories frequently and voluntarily when seeking out their clientele or travelling as a student or teacher, many Jewish men and women would cross borders as refugees during a persecution. In the papers, specific challenges of Jewish inhabitants from the eastern margins of the Holy Roman Empire in Austria, Bohemia and Brandenburg, as well as from the border regions in the western Mediterranean, will be analysed and put into a wider context.
