Abstract

This session aims to understand how Portugal was not closed in its borders and, despite its peripherical location, remained connected to the outside world throughout the Middle Ages. The first paper will discuss the place of Portuguese cardinals in the European context, highlighting their roles as mediators and intermediaries across Christendom's borders. The second will focus on the migration of skilled ironworkers from Northern Spain to Portugal, discussing its implications on the circulation across borders of goods, techniques, and knowledge. The third will discuss the construction of the border across the river Minho in Northern Portugal, contrasting how the various interests of local communities, municipal authorities, and Kings contributed towards a complex border situation.
