| Abstract | Ian Forrest's Trustworthy Men: How Inequality and Faith Made the Medieval Church (2018) boldly argues that English bishops c. 1200-1500 not only exploited social inequality in peasant communities, but increased it. The book ranges from the intellectual history of faith and trust in the Middle Ages, to the operations of church courts, to the structure of peasant society, to memory and material culture. An argument that cuts across so many fields deserves a panel of scholars working within these fields and even outside them. Our goal: a lively discussion of the book and the future avenues of research it opens up. Participants include Roisin Cossar (University of Manitoba), Ian Forrest (University of Oxford), Phillipa Hoskin (University of Cambridge), Phillipp Schofield (Aberystwyth University), and Robert N. Swanson (Shaanxi Normal University). |
