Abstract

This session offers three new readings of the Old English translations of Boethius's De Consolatione Philosophiae and Augustine's Soliloquia, works traditionally attributed to Alfred the Great. Papers in this session will situate these Alfredian philosophical dialogues in their literary, historical and political contexts, considering their place in the wider networks of royal succession, theology, and other literary genres. These new readings will draw on the main texts of the translations, the poetic portions of the Boethius, along with prefatory material.
