Abstract

The critical edition of the capitularies of Louis the Pious and Lothar I (814‒840) will be published by theMonumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH) in 2023. On this occasion, the group of editors organizes three sessions on different aspects of the legal reforms in the Carolingian empire: some papers give a review of the results of the critical edition and discuss the open questions raised by the analysis of textual variants; some papers present ongoing studies (affiliated with the editorial project) which focus on particular legal topics regulated in the capitularies; and other papers are based on the preprint version and will reflect on the consequences for our view of the capitularies from an outside perspective.
