Abstract | The works of the ancient Jewish historian Flavius Josephus were a central part of the cultural heritage of the Christian Middle Ages, with a profound role in diverse historical and religious traditions. The Latin translations of his works were unique sources for biblical history, Second-Temple Judaism, and the topography of the Holy Land. This panel seeks to explore different ways of reading and appropriating Josephus by analyzing the medieval manuscript tradition, historical exegesis, and crusade chronicles. These diverse aspects of Josephus' reception reveal complex entanglements of knowledge transmitted by generations of Christian scholars and readers. |
