Abstract

Christian spirituality is a dimension of human life in the Middle Ages that can hardly be overestimated. It gave rise to diverse expressions and underwent important transformations. This section, sponsored by the International Society for the Study of Medieval Theology, focuses on three key elements of medieval spirituality: the emergence of the Gregorian Mass motif, Eucharistic devotion in late medieval fraternities, and the theology of spiritual life of the influential Franciscan, Bonaventure. Thereby the tension between individual and community is explored, for spirituality is on the one hand something very personal, but on the other hand it was always in communal interaction.
