Abstract

There has been a growing appreciation amongst historians in recent decades of the embeddedness of Jews within the communities in which they resided. Scholars have moved away from viewing the Jews and Christians as geographically close but divided by impermeable barriers. Instead, a number of studies produced in the past two decades have explored the 'near-paradox of simultaneous connection and separation'. This is most evident in the area of credit, which was ubiquitous in medieval society. This panel will draw on examples of Jewish creditors from across Europe to consider themes which spanned religious and geographic boundaries. As a result, it will be seen that similar patterns can be detected across the continent.
