Abstract | Female work was of great importance for the economy of villages and towns in the Middle Ages, even if women usually lacked formal training and were paid poorly. Women left their hometowns to earn money and connected urban centres with rural hinterlands. However, they not only worked, but they also were market agents who acted as investors to increase their wealth. This session explores the work conditions of women in Nuremberg, the mobility of female employees of the hospitals of 16th-century Speyer, and female investments in Montpellier in the 13th and 14th centuries. |
