Abstract

As late-antique life was framed around affiliation with various discrete and conceptual networks, the processes used to mark membership in, ejection from, and interactions between these groups were correspondingly important. This session - the first in our series - considers processes of creating boundaries between late-antique networks from diverse yet complementary perspectives. Mawdsley explores formalised banishment as a socially and politically valuable means of defining society's borders. Wiśniewski draws the session to a close by analysing the narratives around and processes of separating clergy and laity in a variety of environments.
