Abstract

This session explores the varieties of linear representations of time, bringing together papers on medieval timelines as well as papers on modern timelines of medieval time. The use of graphical means to visualise chronology seems intrinsic to historians' efforts to systematise and distil historical complexity. Timelines have been used for centuries to make connections across time, synchronise narratives, divide time into periods and to map the past in general. They are also prevalent in classrooms, textbooks and educational digital resources, providing students with ways of working with history that might revolve less around text and writing. We are interested in investigating some of the opportunities this might provide.
