Abstract

This session will explore the organisation of work in medieval Europe for the period c. 1000-1400. Each paper will examine the roles and responsibilities of workers and how they functioned within larger socio-economic networks. Paper -a will explore the status of workers on English manors through their representations within key sources, such as the Domesday Book and Rotuli de Dominabus; paper -b will analyse work at sea through crew roles and responsibilities; and paper-c will examine the interconnected system of peasant officials and workers in later medieval England through the records of their remuneration.
