Abstract

Drawing on the IMC's theme of 'networks and entanglements', this session seeks to investigate the complex relationships created between the Byzantine Empire and neighboring powers - such as the Armenians, Latins, and both Catholic Christians and Muslims elsewhere - as well as the reasons and motivations behind those relationships. The three papers examine the delicate alliances that both helped and hindered Byzantine diplomatic success, forged marriages, and contributed to late Byzantine civil wars.
