Abstract

This is the first of a three-session series intended to investigate how entanglements among medieval artworks channelled existing social networks within communities, e.g., monastic orders and political environments, for the creation of a new shared history that transcends differences. This session focuses on transregional relationships in medieval Europe. Paper A) reinterprets the presence of Byzantine illuminations in west European manuscripts. B) discusses the dissemination of patterns in the design of sacred spaces within the Benedictine order from Italy to England.
