Abstract | This is the first of three sessions in honour of Cardiff University's Professor Helen J. Nicholson, on the occasion of her retirement. These papers will examine elements of queenship, gender power structures, and piety in the 12th and early 13th centuries. The first paper will examine queenship and gender power structures in the kingdom of Jerusalem, exploring themes such as dynastic co-rule and family conflict. The next paper will explore the politics surrounding the marriages of Baldwin of Boulogne, specifically giving these three women lives of their own and re-assessing their political significance. The final paper of the session , on the 'Itinerary and Trials of Margaret of Jerusalem' explores themes of crusade, women's history and spirituality. |
