Abstract

This session intends to present the first results of the ongoing project iForal. Portuguese municipal charters in the Middle Ages: an historical and linguistic approach in the digital era (Centre for History of the University of Lisbon). Municipal charters were granted by kings to towns in order to rule the rights and the duties of the inhabitants. They are networked texts by nature, as their normative content were transmitted from one town to another, creating a complex textual tradition. Participants in this session will explore some political and social impacts of these charters on the governance of the Portuguese kingdom.
