Abstract

The editors of a new volume, Rethinking the Carolingian Reforms, invited reflections on the ideas and methods of improvement during the early Middle Ages. In this session, we examine the fields of canon law and liturgy. Sampson discusses the differing liturgical needs of various communities reflected in their manuscripts. Mitalaité will discuss the employment of reform terminology in the councils and canon law of the Carolingian period. Westwell examines a Missal made at Bobbio at the end of the 9th century, a liturgical compendium of extraordinary comprehensiveness.
