Abstract

The Seven Sages of Rome, also known as Dolopathos or Book of Sindibad, with adaptations in at least 30 European, Middle Eastern, and Asian languages, is 'one of the most successful story matters of world literature' (Roth 2008) but now virtually unknown. This session presents recent research on this story matter, elucidates the generative potential of these traditions' story-matter across cultural contexts. The papers discuss versions and continuations in three languages (Scottish, French, and German), focusing on aspects of heterosexuality, domesticity, sexual violence, and cross-cultural relationships.
