Abstract

These two sessions will present new research and perspectives on the use of Vikings in public history, especially with regards to museums, re-creation(s), and re-enactment(s) in a European context. After an introduction providing a brief overview of current scholarship, the main contributions highlight and analyse relevant aspects of the use and role of Vikings in public history. The 13 chapters engage with the following issues: Viking tourism, re-enactment, and subcultures; perspectives on the Vikings in Popular Culture; the portrayal and use of the Vikings in Museums and Heritage Sites; and finally, the use of the Viking Age in politics and racism.
