Abstract

What role did Paschal II play in the Investiture Contest? Is it possible to talk of a 'Paschalian' Reform? The aim of these sessions is to analyse Paschal II's pontificate (1099-1118) in light of new interpretations of the 11th-century reform movement. By tackling many crucial aspects of Paschal II's pontificate - relations with Rome and the patrimony, clashes with the secular powers, the Crusade movement, the monastic world, the development of Canon Law, artistic patronage - these three sessions argue that Paschal II played a pivotal role in the history of the Roman church and in its claims to primacy.
