Abstract

This session explores the production and circulation of Latin literature in Late Antiquity, focusing on the choices that late Latin authors made in compiling, arranging, and publishing their works. The papers focus on literature of the long 4th century, considering how Symmachus' letters were arranged for political ends, Servius' choice and deployment of citations to establish his authority, and Ausonius' use of Greek in his Latin ludic poetry. By approaching questions of authorship and readership from the perspectives of epistolography, grammatical commentary, and poetry, the session aims to contextualize the social and political aspects of Latin literary creation in Late Antiquity.
