Abstract | Small towns, as objects of study in themselves, are a marginal topic in urban history and, in the analysis of urban networks, are often envisioned from the perspective of the prominence of the big cities. The session aims to challenge this view and demonstrate the role of small border towns in the construction of networks, routes, and considering mobility between medieval Portugal and Castile both in times of war and peace. This will be achieved by applying a comparative survey to study the road network, buildings to support travellers (e.g. inns), and the actors involved in trade and war between this towns. |
