Abstract

The biblical figure of Abraham has become a frequent object of scholarly interest among historians of medieval thought and culture in recent decades. Particular attention has been paid to the story of Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac in patristic and medieval theology and exegesis, but also to the representations of Abraham in medieval art and in literature, both Christian and Jewish. The session hopes to contribute to this strand of research by drawing attention to some hitherto unexamined aspects of the reception of this biblical patriarch by medieval scholastic theologians. The first paper (a - Wciórka) will provide an overview over the 12th-century scholastic debates revolving around Abraham's supposed belief in the future incarnation. Following up upon this, the second paper (b - Bieniak) will assess in greater detail Stephen Langton's discussion of whether Abraham merited salvation before the incarnation of Christ. The third paper (c - Blažek) will present the debate on Abraham's polygamy in 13th- and early 14th-century theology.
