Abstract

Warfare was an omnipresent phenomenon throughout the Middle Ages. Contemporary chroniclers and intellectuals living through these dramatic events interpreted them in a thoroughly Christian framework. This session offers insights of early career scholars on this process from a longue durée perspective of the entire medieval age stretching from the 5th to the 15th century. On a case-study basis, the papers cover respectively the influential historiographical work of Orosius, the 10th-century Chronicle of Salerno, the legitimation of the Crusades, and their intellectual legacy in the Late Middle Ages. From different geographical and temporal backgrounds, they illustrate networks and entanglements at play in the interaction of Christianity and warfare.
