Abstract

The history of rhetoric has often been narrowed to the traditional narrative of a new Latin eloquence born in Italy around 1400 under the influence of humanist scholars breaking with the medieval approach to language. This narrative shall be reassessed by taking into account theoretical and practical contributions that affected vernacular versified eloquence in the Francophone world between the 14th-16th centuries. This session will present a variety of collective practices of eloquence in verse in different Francophone regions in urban, curial or mixed contexts
