Abstract

This session showcases three complementary ways of investigating the cultural networks in which medieval Iberian liturgical manuscripts participated. Rubio Sadia illustrates how close investigation of manuscript contents (including liturgical structures, repertoire and layers of additions) can point to a manuscript's origins and position within wider liturgical transmission patterns. Hornby and Jones present companion papers. Hornby identifies 12+ music scribes in one 10th-century manuscript, interrogating their roles and interrelationships. Jones examines each scribe's idiosyncratic use of musical notation, identifying the extent to which they participate in wider networks of notational practice.
