Abstract

The history of rhetoric has often been narrowed to the traditional narrative of a new Latin eloquence born in Italy around 1400 under the influence of humanist scholars breaking with the medieval approach to language. This narrative shall be reassessed taking into account theoretical and practical contributions that affected vernacular versified eloquence in the Francophone world between the 14th-16th centuries. This session will focus on individual carriers and communicative practices of poets-orators in different Francophone regions.
