Abstract

This session examines the making of Church law at the level of synods, councils, and bishops in the earlier Middle Ages. It considers how authoritative texts were received and how legal precedent was actively shaped. Focusing particularly on the roles of bishops and councils, the session asks questions around how individuals used legal texts to construct, establish, and expound their differing interpretations of authority.
