Title: SETTLEMENT AND ECONOMY AROUND THE NORTH SEA: MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT AROUND THE NORTH SEA: AN ASSESSMENT AND PROPOSALS FOR HOLISTIC AND BALANCED APPROACHES - AN OPENING LECTURE TO THE STRAND
Speaker: Frans Verhaeghe, Department of Art and Archaeology, Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Over the past years, medieval settlement archaeology in the North Sea area has developed considerably, along lines reflecting the different regional traditions and the different disciplinary approaches. The countries surrounding the North Sea, however, possess great similarities in landscape topography and environment, which presented similar challenges to past societies. Within the national contexts of the practive of archaeology, differences rather than common themes have often been over-emphasized.
This strand aims at providing a series of regionally-based synthetic reviews and key case-studies on inter-related themes, concerning settlement and economy around the North Sea in the medieval world. Results of major current European projects will be presented with a view to indentifying avenues of future co-operative research.

Whether the gun depicted was a real piece of artillery or just a figment of the artist's imagination has been hotly debated over the years. In 1999, The Royal Armouries decided to make a copy based on the manuscript and subject it to a real live test firing. This workshop will not only explain how the replica was made and how it performed, but participants will be able to inspect and discuss the project in front of the replica itself.

TUESDAY 11 JULY 2000: 19.30 - 20.30

Session: 902
Title: CURRENT AWARENESS: LOOKING FORWARD AND COMPARING BACKWARD THROUGH THE 1990S - A WORKSHOP
Organisers: Janice Bogstad, University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire and Philip E. Kaveny
Purpose: During the 1990s, there has been a 1000 fold increase of access to the Internet, also apparent in Medieval Studies. Yet attendees at our previous Leeds presentations have made us aware of a gulf between high end users and the average scholar, as well as North American and Western European users in relation to the rest of the world. We propose a current awareness project that gives an overview of this year's projects. The Internet will be used to monitor current work, according to area divisions of the Congress, and to make comparisons with ongoing efforts, with a concentration on monitoring and quality-assessment factors.

Session: 913
Title: PERFORMING DRAMA: THE USE OF MEDIEVAL THEATRE IN THE CLASSROOM - A ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION
Organiser: Donald Perret, Emerson College, Boston, Massachusetts
Moderator: Simonetta Cochis, Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky
Purpose: This round table discussion is devoted to the use of performance in the teaching of medieval drama. An important tool in the instruction of language, theatre and literature, the actual viewing of plays from the period, secular or religious, live or on video, changes the student's (and often the teacher's) perspective and opens up the classroom to a variety of questions of both pedagogic and scholarly interest: linguistic significance, historical placement, textual analysis, staging considerations and audience reception. Ultimately, the aim of the session will be to encourage an exciting exchange of ideas and methods for the implementation of performance activities in the classroom. Participants in the discussion will include Mark Cruse (New York University), Kathy Krause (University of Missouri), Yvonne LeBlanc (North Broward Preparatory School), Jane Oakshott (Leeds) and Donald Perret (Emerson College).

Session: 914
Title: THE LEGACY OF LEONARD BOYLE IX: A MEMORY AND A PROMISE - A ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION
Organisers: Brenda M. Bolton, Department of History, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London and Mark Zier, Department of Religious Studies, University of the Pacific, Stockton, California
Moderator: James M. Powell, Department of History, Syracuse University, New York
Purpose: This Round Table forms a forum which enables us to look at the life and work of our friend and colleague Leonard Boyle in the field of Medieval Studies - his contribution as teacher and leader; guide to the past and innovator to the future. It is hoped that the IMC will provide a permanent strand in his memory even if he himself is irreplaceable. Participants in this open discussion will include Maria Elena Bertoldi (Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma), Barry Dobson (University of Cambridge), Simon Gaine (University of Oxford), James R. Ginther (University of Leeds), Lesley Smith (University of Oxford), Margaret Wade Labarge (Ottawa University), Marjorie Curry Woods (University of Texas), Anthony D. Wright (University of Leeds) and Mark Zier (University of the Pacific).
