Tickets will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis. There will be three types of tickets: to the Lawnswood Room (main keynote lecture room), to the Bramley Room (video relay from Lawnswood Room), and reserve tickets. Reserve ticket holders are not guaranteed a space in one of the two lecture rooms. Unclaimed seats in the Lawnswood Room and the Bramley Room will be reallocated to holders of reserve tickets five minutes before the lecture is scheduled to begin.

Over the past years, medieval settlement archaeology in the North Sea area has developed considerably, along lines reflecting the different regional traditions and the different disciplinary approaches. The countries surrounding the North Sea, however, possess great similarities in landscape topography and environment, which presented similar challenges to past societies. Within the national contexts of the practive of archaeology, differences rather than common themes have often been over-emphasized.
This strand aims at providing a series of regionally-based synthetic reviews and key case-studies on inter-related themes, concerning settlement and economy around the North Sea in the medieval world. Results of major current European projects will be presented with a view to indentifying avenues of future co-operative research.

Purpose: Perhaps the most famous illustration of early artillery is that contained in a manuscript written by Walter de Milemete in 1326. Whether the gun depicted was a real piece of artillery or just a figment of the artist's imagination has been hotly debated over the years. In 1999, The Royal Armouries decided to make a copy based on the manuscript and subject it to a real live test firing. This workshop will not only explain how the replica was made and how it performed, but participants will be able to inspect and discuss the project in front of the replica itself.

Purpose: In this workshop we will demonstrate and discuss teleconferencing technology, Quick-Time Virtual Reality (QTVR) panoramas, Smooth Move spherical imaging, and digital video and audio. We then will examine the role of these technologies in the attempt to extend the classroom both onto multiple campuses and into significant cultural and archaeological sites. Building on the extremely successful foundation of last year's technology and pedagogy session at Leeds, this workshop will begin with a demonstration of various attempts to utilize cutting-edge technology in the medieval classroom, and with a discussion of the theories, technology, and pitfalls involved. The session then will open up into a wider discussion of the uses and abuses of virtual reality technology in the teaching of medieval materials. Participants in this workshop will include Mark Albert (Gettysburg College), Christopher Fee, Charles Hannon (Gettysburg College), Mark Sanderson (University of Sheffield) and Joseph Zoller (Gettysburg College).

Title: CURRENT AWARENESS: LOOKING FORWARD AND COMPARING BACKWARD THROUGH THE 1990S - A WORKSHOP

Purpose: During the 1990s, there has been a 1000 fold increase of access to the Internet, also apparent in Medieval Studies. Yet attendees at our previous Leeds presentations have made us aware of a gulf between high end users and the average scholar, as well as North American and Western European users in relation to the rest of the world. We propose a current awareness project that gives an overview of this year's projects. The Internet will be used to monitor current work, according to area divisions of the Congress, and to make comparisons with ongoing efforts, with a concentration on monitoring and quality-assessment factors.

Title: PERFORMING DRAMA: THE USE OF MEDIEVAL THEATRE IN THE CLASSROOM - A ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION

Purpose: This round table discussion is devoted to the use of performance in the teaching of medieval drama. An important tool in the instruction of language, theatre and literature, the actual viewing of plays from the period, secular or religious, live or on video, changes the student's (and often the teacher's) perspective and opens up the classroom to a variety of questions of both pedagogic and scholarly interest: linguistic significance, historical placement, textual analysis, staging considerations and audience reception. Ultimately, the aim of the session will be to encourage an exciting exchange of ideas and methods for the implementation of performance activities in the classroom. Participants in the discussion will include Mark Cruse (New York University), Kathy Krause (University of Missouri), Yvonne LeBlanc (North Broward Preparatory School), Jane Oakshott (Leeds) and Donald Perret (Emerson College).
