Abstract

This second session on 'othering' in southern Italy before the Norman conquests will look in more detail at identities in urban and monastic contexts. Caroline Goodson will then address cultural diversity in south Italian urban centres and demonstrate the strategies employed by southern Italians to derive benefit from this diversity; she will ask how 'othering' might have worked among neighbours. Turning back once more to Monte Cassino, Sophie Gruber will analyse the Erchempert's History and address its literary strategies when dealing with 'others', especially with political players in the region.
