Abstract | This session will explore concepts of 'Otherness' in high and late medieval Irish monasticism. Using written sources and archaeological evidence, the session will consider the relationship of Irish monastic houses to their English and continental neighbours, and within their immediate environments. Papers will focus on the nature of monastic enclosure in Ireland, on patterns of adaption and assimilation in Dominican fraternal houses, and the spread of the Third Order Franciscans in the West of Ireland. Aspects of non-spatial 'Otherness' within the medieval Irish Church will be explored in 'The Irish Church, II'. |
