Abstract

University towns in the Late Middle Ages were home to a large contingent of students,  a motley social group that was very notable in society. Not only because of their numbers, but also for their behaviour and noise, in both a positive and a negative sense. Their presence is very visible in the  urban fabric of these towns. Moreover, students had a distinct own material culture, with objects that are typical for colleges and students houses, and were typically sold second-hand in university towns.

University students were an international group, flocking from all countries and across borders towards good universities, often travelling from one university town to another. The itinerant character of the ‘transition period’ that is academic life made students face crises of all sorts: in their personal life, afflicting their social group, their Alma Mater, or their homeland while they were away. This session will investigate the dynamics of student life & how students dealt with these challenges.
