Between 3-6 July 2023, we were delighted to welcome 2,648 in-person and virtual delegates from over 60 countries to IMC 2023 to enjoy five days of papers and events all things medieval.

Hosted via Confex’s virtual event platform, the annual event generated over 900 hours of recordings that were available for registered delegates to view via the event platform until 31 August. This was reported in the recently launched August edition of the IMC Newsletter, which contains a full account of IMC 2023, including a rundown of the academic programme and a summary of the fairs and events and excursions schedule, and can be viewed here.

Feedback from this year has indicated that delegates particularly enjoyed the ‘rich and diverse’ programme, as well as ‘the number of excellent panels’ that meant they were able to ‘talk to medievalists from around the world’. Many enthused that ‘it was good to meet in person again’ and ‘meet colleagues from different countries.’ Many also praised the benefits of a hybrid conference, stating that they enjoyed ‘the fact that researchers could attend IMC 2023 both in person and remotely, which contributes greatly to the accessibility of knowledge to academics all over the world.’

The availability of session recordings was highlighted as a bonus for attendees, with one delegate commenting: ‘I will be lucky to watch all of the sessions I am interested in before the end of August!’ Virtual participation and recording usage data has shown that 85.75% of sessions at IMC 2023 had a virtual audience and recordings were accessed thousands of times in the weeks following IMC 2023, with over a fifth of sessions being re-viewed on the 31 August. Staff were on hand throughout the IMC to ensure that initial feedback from session moderators and organisers also praised the assistance provided by IMC staff and the virtual cluster.

As always, we are already busy making plans for IMC 2024 and we are delighted to welcome Daniel R. Curtis (School of History, Culture & Communication, Erasmus University Rotterdam) as the coordinator for the special thematic strand, which will be ‘Crisis’. We are also pleased to launch our new proposals management and submissions system for IMC 2024. Confex, who also provide our virtual platform, will be providing a new submission portal which will enable session organisers to submit their details to us via a new, secure online platform. We've prepared some guidance on how to submit proposals through this new submission portal, and this can be accessed by visiting the proposals area of our website.

We have already received a large number of paper proposals and look forward to receiving sessions proposals over the coming weeks.
